Dinsdagavond stond de Amy Winehouse Band in poppodium Paard Den Haag. Voorafgaand heb ik veel mensen moeten uitleggen dat het niet gaat om een coverband, maar de officiële band van de zangeres die op 23 juli 2011 overleed. Toevallig hebben we dezelfde geboortedatum, 14 september.
Vanwege mijn persaccreditatie was ik als eerste in de zaal. Alles ademde al Amy. Haar foto stond prominent op een groot scherm en de positionering van de bandleden was ook al te zien. De saxofoon en trompet, zo kenmerkend voor haar sound, stonden al klaar.
In een wisselende samenstelling bestaat de band uit: Dale Davis (bas); Hawie Gondwe (gitaar); Nathan Allen – Stuart Anning (drums); Dave Temple – Frank Walden (saxofoon); Henry Collins – Dominic Glover – Ben Edwards (trompet). De zang is in handen van Bronte Shande.
Het was een eerlijk en mooi eerbetoon aan de veel te vroeg overleden Britse zangeres. Het was kunstig om te zien én te horen dat Bronte heel dicht bij zichzelf blijft tijdens haar performance. Natuurlijk is ze flamboyant, draagt ze een mooie bloem in haar haar en wiegt ze met haar heupen, maar ze is vooral helemaal zichzelf. Een imitatie van Amy zou dit optreden ook niet goed doen. Dat heeft de band, maar ook Bronte, heel goed begrepen.
Er zijn natuurlijk meer verschillen; zo drinkt Bronte water, maar speelt ze toch grappig en brutaal met het publiek. De band doet ieder op zijn eigen manier daarin mee. Dominic Glover en Frank Walden maken aan de linkerkant van het podium nog even een geheel eigen, grappige act. Stuk voor stuk zie je iedereen genieten.
Uiteraard kwamen alle grote hits voorbij (wel bewaard tot het laatste stuk van de show, maar ze deden ze vol overgave!). Er werd verder bekend en onbekend werk van Amy gespeeld, en ook een favoriete van Amy zelf, het nummer “That Thing” van Lauryn Hill, bekend van de Fugees. Dan zie je meteen hoe multi muzikaal deze band is. Ze kunnen alles!
Basgitarist Dale Davis sprak aan het einde nog mooie, oprechte woorden aan zijn goede vriendin Amy. Dale Davis wordt gezien als een van haar beste vrienden. Na de show nam hij uitgebreid de tijd om op de foto te gaan, te signeren, en te praten over zijn bijzondere periode toen niet Bronte, maar Amy mee op tournee ging.
Het was een fantastische avond; alles klopte. De band tourt nog even door Nederland en is een absolute aanrader! Je waant je weer even terug in de tijd. De band leeft, en Amy is op deze manier ook weer een beetje terug.

Amy Winehouse lives on: A night of tribute and celebration
On Tuesday evening, the Amy Winehouse Band performed at the pop podium Paard in The Hague. Prior to the event, I had to explain to many people that this is not a cover band, but the official band of the singer who passed away on July 23, 2011. Coincidentally, we share the same birthday, September 14.
Thanks to my press accreditation, I was the first in the venue. Everything already breathed Amy. Her photo was prominently displayed on a large screen, and the positioning of the band members was already visible. The saxophone and trumpet, so characteristic of her sound, were ready.
The band, which has a varying lineup, consists of: Dale Davis (bass); Hawie Gondwe (guitar); Nathan Allen – Stuart Anning (drums); Dave Temple – Frank Walden (saxophone); Henry Collins – Dominic Glover – Ben Edwards (trumpet). The vocals are handled by Bronte Shande.
It was a sincere and beautiful tribute to the much-too-early deceased British singer. It was artistic to see and hear how Bronte remains true to herself during her performance. Of course, she is flamboyant, wears a beautiful flower in her hair, and sways her hips, but above all, she is completely herself. An imitation of Amy would not do justice to this performance. The band and Bronte understood this very well.
There are, of course, more differences; for example, Bronte drinks water but engages playfully and cheekily with the audience. Each member of the band contributes in their own way. Dominic Glover and Frank Walden create their own funny act on the left side of the stage. You can see that everyone is enjoying themselves.
Naturally, all the big hits were played (saved for the last part of the show, but they performed them with enthusiasm!). They also played well-known and lesser-known work by Amy, including a favorite of hers, “That Thing” by Lauryn Hill, known from the Fugees. This immediately showcases how musically diverse this band is. They can do it all!
At the end, bassist Dale Davis shared some heartfelt words for his good friend Amy. Dale Davis is regarded as one of her best friends. After the show, he took the time to take photos, sign autographs, and talk about his special time when it was not Bronte, but Amy who toured with him.
It was a fantastic evening; everything was perfect. The band is still touring through the Netherlands and comes highly recommended! It feels like stepping back in time. The band is alive, and in this way, Amy is also a bit back.
